Updates
Changelog
Every release brings Parolina closer to being the best vocabulary companion for your browser.
Live in both the Chrome Web Store and Microsoft Edge Add-ons. This update brings everything below it as far back as 0.53 in one go - those versions were built but never published on their own, so your browser goes from 0.52 straight to this.
- addedA "Practise again" button. Finishing the day's review used to be the end of it: the popup hid every practice mode the moment nothing was due, and the review screen offered only "refresh", which can return nothing but the same empty queue. Practice runs over your whole dictionary instead of over what is due, so there is always something to do.
- addedAnd it changes nothing. Not the schedule that decides when a word comes back, not your streak, and no XP. That is deliberate: an extra evening of practice that pushed every interval out would wreck the spacing that makes the reviews work. The screen you start it from says so before you begin.
- changed"Review missed words" and "Review all session words" no longer count either. They fed words you had just answered back through the scoring path, so answering the same word correctly twice in one sitting pushed its interval out twice and paid XP twice. Having just been shown the answer, the second answer says little about whether you remember it. Both buttons still do exactly what they say.

- fixedPractice no longer asks questions that cannot be answered. Fill in the Blank needs the sentence a word was saved from, so it can blank the word out of it. A word saved without one was asked anyway, and the whole question came out as a single blank line with nothing around it. It now only asks words that have a sentence, and says so plainly when none of the words due has one.
- fixedWord Reveal showed a dash where the clue belongs. The clue is the translation, so a word saved without one left you guessing a row of dots with nothing to go on. Words with no translation are no longer offered for practice in any mode, because none of them works without one: the flashcard turns over to nothing, typing has no answer to check against, and the count on the toolbar included them too.
- fixedThose words are not lost. Your vocabulary list has a "needs a translation" filter that counts them, so you can fill them in and they come back into practice.
- fixedA sentence holding a different form of the word - "io corro" for "correre" - also produced an empty blank. It is now recognised as having nothing to blank out.

- fixedThe note crediting Google Translate no longer appears over translations Google never wrote. When the service cannot be reached, Parolina falls back to what it knows locally, and both the save panel and the instant-translate popup went on naming Google anyway. They say it now only when the service actually answered.
- changedThe save panel no longer prints a confidence rating. It read "low confidence" for every word in every language, always - not because the drafts were poor, but because the figure was the lowest of ten separate ratings and one of them was fixed at "low". A warning that never varies tells you nothing about the word in front of you. What it was meant to warn about is still said, and said more usefully: the panel tells you when the translation service is unreachable, and offers you the right pair when the language it detects disagrees with your dictionary.

- changedAnonymous usage events now say which store the extension came from, Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons. It is one fixed word baked into each package, not anything read from your browser, and it is there so the two can be compared. Nothing else about what is sent has changed, and the switch that turns analytics off works as before.

- addedSaved words now come with their dictionary definition - what the word means, in its own language, the way a monolingual dictionary would put it. Up to two senses, one per part of speech, so "run" arrives with both the verb and the noun, and most come with an example. Definitions show in the pop-up before you save, in the add and edit form, and under a saved word in your list, and they travel with the word into CSV, the JSON backup and the Anki deck.
- addedNothing new is sent to get them. They ride the request Parolina already makes for the translation: no new service, no new permission, and nothing leaves your device beyond the word you selected. A word with no dictionary entry simply arrives without them, as does every word saved before this version.
- fixedDefinitions survive a trip out to a spreadsheet and back. The exported file used a long dash between a definition and its example, which is ordinary punctuation in exactly that kind of writing, so a definition containing one came back split in half. The separator is now a character that cannot appear in the text. Files exported by earlier versions still import.
- fixedThe exported CSV opens correctly in Excel, and a file edited in Excel and saved back can be imported again. Excel writes CSV with the separator your system uses - a semicolon in Italian, German and Russian settings - and those files used to be rejected for missing columns they plainly had.
- fixedA tag containing a ";" or a "|" is refused when you type it, with a message saying which character. Those characters separate tags in the exported file, so a tag holding one used to come back as two, quietly and only after a round trip.
- fixedThe save pop-up no longer offers one dictionary and shows another. When you select a word in a language an existing dictionary translates into, Parolina offers to create the pair the other way round, and underneath it kept showing the old dictionary as chosen - which is not where the word would have gone.
- fixedThe sentence saved with a word no longer starts with somebody else's comma, picked up from the clause before it.
- changedAnonymous analytics use an identifier of their own, separate from the one cloud sync uses to tell your devices apart. They shared a value before, which put the anonymous events and your signed-in account in the same database with something in common - not in what was sent, but in what could be matched up afterwards. One deliberate consequence: the old identifier is not carried over, so install counts start again from this version.
- changedThe analytics setting now says that it is on by default, in all six languages. It always was, and the switch showed it, but the description never said so.

- changedAn Anki deck or a Quizlet set is now one dictionary - the one you have open - and the file is named after it. Exporting everything at once put the same Italian word into one set twice with two different answers, an English one and a Russian one, and Quizlet has no way to accept either: in Learn and Test that word is marked wrong about half the time. CSV still exports whatever scope you pick, because a spreadsheet can hold every dictionary and name each row's own.
- changedThe add and edit form no longer contradicts itself. The line at the top describes the dictionary while the badges inside the fields describe the word, and for a word saved the other way round those two disagreed at a glance. When a word keeps its own direction the form now says so in a sentence.
2026-09-08
Live in the Chrome Web Store and Microsoft Edge Add-ons since 9 September 2026. Your browser updates itself — there is nothing to reinstall.
- addedEvery field says which language it holds. The word and its translation looked identical, so the only way to tell them apart was to remember which way round your dictionary went. Each now carries its own language, inside the field. It follows the word, not the dictionary — a word saved after swapping the direction sits in its dictionary reversed, and the label says so.
- addedA speaker button on every word in your list, beside Edit. Hearing a word used to mean opening it for editing, which is not where you meet your words. It reads the word itself rather than the phonetic spelling — the spelling is often empty, the word never is.
- addedThe same button during reviews, and deliberately only after the answer is on screen. Reverse translation, Word Reveal and Fill in the Blank all ask you to produce the word, so a speaker offered any earlier would simply read out the answer.
- addedA new setting: "Ask before saving into a different dictionary." A saved word goes to the dictionary that reads its language, even when you have another one open. Turn this on and Parolina asks first, with the option to refuse. Off by default.
- fixedTranslations are filled in again. Google had been refusing the request, so a word arrived with its translation empty and a message saying the request was turned down — usually after the first word of a session, and it could stay that way for hours. The cause was a single word in the address Parolina sends: it identified itself as a client that this service does not answer when a browser asks. It now identifies itself the way a browser extension is expected to. The same service, the same words sent, nothing new asked of your browser — and if it is ever refused again, the word still saves with the translation left for you to type.
- fixedThe dictionary you are working in is no longer overruled by the word you select. With an English → Italian dictionary open and an Italian → Russian one also on the list, every Italian word was pulled into the Russian dictionary — it reads Italian, after all — even right after you had chosen otherwise by hand, while the translation on screen stayed English. Parolina now compares the whole language pair rather than one side of it.
- fixedWords from a page written in the language you are learning are no longer filed backwards. With an English → Italian dictionary open on an Italian page, Parolina was asking for an Italian word to be translated into Italian: the draft came back as the word itself, the pronunciation was empty, and the speaker read Italian in an English accent. It now recognises the page and offers the reversed pair — it offers, you decide.
- fixedA word is never handed to you as its own translation. A draft that just repeats the word is not an answer, so the field arrives empty with a note explaining why, instead of looking finished and getting saved that way.
- fixedChanging the dictionary in the save panel no longer leaves you stuck with a blank draft and no way to swap the direction back.
2026-08-25
- addedSuggestions on the Analytics tab (Pro). A short list of what is worth doing next, read from your own review record: the words that keep going wrong, a dictionary you have not opened in a fortnight, a backlog worth splitting over two days. It stays quiet until there is enough history to mean something, rather than padding the list.
- changed"Cloze" is now "Fill in the Blank." It is a term from language teaching, and people who had never met it could not tell what the mode did — which is the entire job of a mode name. Nothing about the mode changed.
- changedThe practice-mode buttons are translated. The caption above each card was translated while the button you actually press was not.
- fixedAn open dashboard now updates when a word is saved into a different dictionary from another tab.
- fixedThe version you are running is shown at the top of Settings and beside the Parolina name on the dashboard, instead of only at the very bottom of a long page.
2026-08-24
- addedPronunciation is filled in for you. Saving a word now also captures how it is said — split into syllables with the stress marked, like guèr·ra — and the form has a speaker button that reads it aloud. Both are free, and neither costs an extra request or a new permission: the reading arrives with the translation Parolina already fetches, and the voice is your browser's own.
- addedWords saved from a webpage are tagged with the site they came from, so you can find everything you picked up on a particular site.
- changedParolina now says when what you are looking at came from AI. The in-page save popup, the instant-translate popup and the dashboard form each state that the draft is machine-made by Google Translate and worth checking before you save. Nothing about how translation works has changed — it has always been Google Translate — it simply was not written anywhere you would see it.
- fixedThe part of speech is detected properly instead of every new word being filed as a noun. Parolina had the answer in the translation response all along and was not using it. A selection of several words is now marked as a phrase.
- fixedPronunciation is kept when you save through the right-click menu, not only from the in-page popup.
2026-08-16
- addedQuizlet export (Pro), beside the existing Anki export in Settings → Data & backup. The file is formatted the way Quizlet's importer expects by default, so it pastes in without touching any separator settings. Parolina had listed this feature for a long time without it existing; it exists now.
2026-08-16
- fixedThe Free and Pro lists now describe only features that exist. "Smart learning suggestions" was advertised on both the extension and the website purely because it had once been planned. Hard Words Workout is Pro, as it has always been described — the restriction existed but was never connected to anything.
- fixedSaving a single word no longer files it into the wrong dictionary when the translator misreads its language. Words like guerra were sometimes read as English on an Italian page. Parolina now checks the detection against the page's own declared language and, when the two disagree, saves into your current dictionary instead of guessing.
2026-07-27
- addedSaving by language. A selected word is filed into the dictionary whose language matches it, instead of whichever dictionary happened to be open, with a small note showing when it routed by language.
- addedCreate the right dictionary on the fly. If the word's language has no dictionary yet, the save popup offers to create the matching pair and save into it in one click.
- addedReverse-direction suggestion. Select a word in a dictionary's target language and Parolina offers the reversed pair instead of a pointless same-language entry.
- added"Ask which dictionary when several match" — a setting for when more than one dictionary shares the same language pair.
- fixedTranslation no longer stops working whenever a Parolina tab is open. Having the dashboard open in another tab could make every webpage report that smart prefill was unavailable, with nothing short of a browser restart bringing it back.
- fixedPressing Save before the translation arrives no longer stores the word with an empty translation in the wrong dictionary.
- fixedAfter the extension updates while a page is open, that page offers a one-click Reload page button instead of a confusing "unavailable" message.
2026-07-23
- addedChoose your background animation. Give the dashboard and Settings a calm animated backdrop — pick from Cosmos, Aurora, Nebula, Gradient, Bubbles, Waves, Fireflies, or turn it Off. Each style adapts to your current theme's colours, respects your system "reduce motion" setting, and your choice syncs across your devices and the Parolina web app. Set it in Settings → Theme (and on the web app under Settings → Appearance).
- improvedMore rotating tips in the popup, plus animation, layout, and reliability polish throughout.
2026-07-21
- addedFree cloud sync is here. Create a free account (email code or Google) and your vocabulary, dictionaries, and progress sync across your devices and browsers. Cloud sync is free for everyone — your data stays local-first, and syncing is entirely opt-in.
- addedStudy anywhere with the Parolina web app (app.parolina.app). A full companion app to add, edit, and review words, manage dictionaries, and see your analytics — on your phone or any browser, no extension needed. Reviews you do there count and sync back.
- addedParolina Pro. An optional upgrade (€3.99/month or €29.99/year) that unlocks unlimited vocabulary and dictionaries plus power tools: Hard Words Workout, advanced analytics, Anki/Quizlet export, and multiple reminder schedules. Cloud sync and every practice mode stay free.
2026-07-20
- addedParolina in your language. The entire interface is now translated into six languages — English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Russian — with a native-quality correction pass.
- improvedA redesigned in-page experience: the save and instant-translate popups now appear neatly anchored in a self-contained UI that never clashes with the page, with a new Parolina theme to match the web app.
2026-07-11
- addedTest yourself right inside the popup. A new Quick test lets you review your due words in a tap or two — multiple choice, flashcards, typing, reverse, cloze (fill the blank), word reveal, or a Mixed mode — without opening a full page. Every answer counts toward your streak, XP, and review schedule, and it's saved instantly, so closing the popup mid-session never loses progress.
- addedWebsite themes that match parolina.app — a warm light and a warm dark — alongside the classic look, so you can pick the palette you like best. Choose a palette and a light/dark/auto mode in Settings.
- addedEdit more of your preferences straight from the popup — default languages, daily goals, and review options — plus a one-tap link to the Parolina web app (app.parolina.app) to study on any device.
- improvedA friendlier, more reliable popup: smoother animations, a 3D flashcard flip, an on-screen keyboard for word reveal, and a gentle confetti when you finish a session.
2026-07-08
- improvedAnonymous, privacy-first usage analytics (with an off-switch in settings) so we can focus on the features that help most — never your words, translations, or personal data.
- improvedOngoing reliability and performance polish across saving, review, and the popup.
- otherOptional cloud sync to back up your vocabulary and pick it up on another device or browser. It will be strictly opt-in and private — your words stay on your device until you choose to sign in and sync.
