The seven practice modes

Seven modes, all free on every plan, plus a Mixed session that shuffles between them. Different modes ask a word in different directions, which is most of why they exist.

The Review tab with the seven practice modes as buttons in a row — Flashcard, Multiple Choice, Typing, Reverse, Fill in the Blank, Drag & Drop and Word Reveal — followed by a Mixed button. Below them a flashcard shows the prompt “to wander” with the answer “vagare” revealed, and Correct and Incorrect buttons.

The seven

  • Flashcard — see the word, recall the translation, turn the card. The fastest way through a queue.
  • Multiple choice — pick the translation from several. Good when a word is new and recall would just be a blank.
  • Typing — write the translation out. Slower, and the one that actually tests production.
  • Reverse translation — you are given the translation and asked for the word. The direction you will need when speaking.
  • Fill in the blank — the word removed from the sentence you originally saved it in, which is why the sentence is kept.
  • Drag & drop — match words to translations in a small set. Easy on the hands, good on a laptop trackpad.
  • Word reveal — the word appears letter by letter as you guess it.

The Mixed session

Mixed shuffles between modes as you go, so the same word gets asked in different directions across a session. It cycles six of the seven — drag & drop is not in the rotation, because a matching set needs several cards at once and Mixed moves one card at a time.

No mode is behind a paywall, and none ever has been. The Hard Words Workout is a Pro feature, but it is a way of choosing which words to practise, not an eighth mode.
